I personally do not believe there is such a thing as a "decent" man. There are only men who pretend to be decent. I do however believe that there are men with self control. By this I mean men that want and need sex as much as the next horn-dog but have sufficient control to not resort to deviant means to get it.
Females in general are still pretty decent (there are exceptions and nymphos do exist) and men have learned that a forward approach does not work, so they make the "prey" believe that they are not after sex, this gets them one step closer to the forbidden fruit. One guy will try his best to bed the girl at the club that just spent 3 hours buying drinks for that very night - another may ask for a phone number and maybe see her there again the following week. Oh no, actually the whole world doesn't think this is the greatest thing at all, there's a HUGE outcry against the thing - sure they're making a CRAP LOAD of money - but there's a massive big deal being made even by the actors in the movie, about how absolutely utterly shit the whole thing really is. It's a complete failure by any other standard except how much money it's made...
You're quite right though, it's an awful story actually - about an abusive and manipulative man and a sad and impressionable virgin who is manipulated and trapped into an abusive and awful relationship with him. And it's "kinky" apparently - as far as I can tell - only coz the dude is rich - if he was poor and lived in a trailer in the woods... the story would probably have been a Criminal Minds episode!
