Stopped in at Jan Smuts Dam in Brakpan on Friday 26th October 2012, to see if anything was happening.
There is a new problem with regard to access to the left hand side (west side) of the site! A bloody cable thief has dug a trench across the road, after the little bridge and just before where you enter back out into the park area, so that the whole of the park area is inaccessible. It will remain like this until someone (municipal parks dept?) closes up the trench. There does not appear to be another way around the obstruction. Only option would be if "they" decide to open the "top gate", off Bedford Street / Elliot Road (I have seen this gate open once or twice recently).
If anyone goes out that way, and notices the road has been fixed, please post an update here?
The right hand side (southern bank of the dam) is accessible. There is a hump in the road a bit past the pub, but people with regular cars are getting over or around the hump, and accessing the grass / park area above the fishing spots.
